Nora's Birthday Party
May 31, 2008 at 11:33 PM My sister sent me an email earlier that said, "You could be the entertainment for Nora's birthday party!" (which she's planning right now) and a link to this:
Yes, it's a kit to make balloon animals.
Um.... I don't even know what to say about this.
I mean, does she really think I'd be interested in making balloon animals for a three-year-old's birthday party? I mean, maybe if I were drunk it wouldn't be so bad... but a grown woman smelling of liquor and dressed as a clown probably wouldn't go over too well with the other parents.
OMG, she didn't even say anything about dressing as a clown. Now I'm worried that, somewhere deep in the corners of my mind, I might be considering doing this, seeing as though I'm thinking of ways to make it better for the kids.
No way, I'm not doing it. I love Nora, but my sister's going to have to hire a professional for this. I'll make the cupcakes. (Something from this cute cupcake book I saw on the Today show.)

Ha, sounds like one of my childhood birthdays. Without the balloon animals. :) You never know, it could be a fun time... or not so much.
Oh come on.. you WANT to do this and you know you do!
I've recently found myself in a similar situation. After helping a friend out a couple times by painting kids' faces at department store events, I find myself now doing it at kid parties for other friends and extended relatives. It's actually not so bad. It gives me a reason to relate to the podlings, and I look like a saint to the adults. I joke with them, "I found, as an artist, that painting on a static canvas didn't provide enough of a challenge. Bring me a canvas hopped up on cake and juice boxes!"

For sure, you get to be the cool auntie who brings the great stuff. Those cupcakes are making me hungry!
I wish I remembered what I liked when I was 3. Maybe you could offer to rent a popcorn machine (like at the movies), or one of those Jumpy Things that kids get into at the fair and jump around in. Maybe I should mind my own business...
What a rip. I bought that SAME thing at the Dollar Tree. But it was totally fun for me and my 3 year old one rainy day. We tried to make swords but they just looked liked um, not swords. :)
