Suits, Ties, Heels & Hose

I'm on a train right now, on my way home from my sister's house. My brother-in-law dropped me off at the station in Greenwich, CT because he had business near there. Greenwich is only a 45 minute train ride to NYC so there are a lot of commuters on the train.

As I look at myself in yoga pants, sneakers, and a hoodie seated amongst the suits, tie, hose and heels, I realize how removed I've become from the professional work force. It's been five years since I've had a day job and I'm okay with that. Everyone looks so uncomfortable... you couldn't pay me enough to go back to that world.

bI have to admit I like waking up each day knowing I have somewhere to be and something to do. I like dressing up in my designer clothes (although hose aren't required at my job) and knowing I look "put together". But I can see the beauty in wearing yoga pants and a hoodie. I guess I'm just saying both ways has its advantages...

I work from home and have a very flexible schedule. When I do have to go to meetings or into an office (about once every 3 months) it's fun for a few days, but I definitely prefer my working situation the way it is now. I always have somewhere to be when I wake up (the gym) and I enjoy being able to go to stores in the middle of the afternoon when they are mostly empty and I can zip in and out. Unless someone was going to double my salary I wouldn't put up with commuting, getting dressed, office gossip, etc. ever again.

anon 8:49... I agree with you about feeling put together. I do like dressing up, but doing so on an every day basis again would make me batty. A woman sitting across from me this morning had these beautiful net hose on. If wore them, I'd probably snag them ten minutes into the day.

I am all for flexibility (except for in my joints, it seems). I HATE the daily commute and am wholly relieved to have gotten out of it. Dressing up is fun, but doing it every day is a drag.
Yoga pants rule!

So funny that you posted this today. I was on my commuter train from Chicago to Lake Forest yesterday and there was a girl across from me wearing a sweatshirt, yoga pants and gym shoes reading YOUR 20 Times book. I interrupted her and asked how she liked the book and she said she was enjoying it and that she was suprised that it was such a quick read. It's just a bunch of odd coincidences.

Katie from Chgo... YAY! I have never seen someone reading my book. My friend Tracy once overheard someone at an airport say, "I pulled a total Save Karyn yesterday and bought a pair of shoes I couldn't afford." And once a friend saw someone reading Save Karyn on a plane, but that's it!

I work from home, but I also travel every week. Having to spend 14 hours not just traveling on a plane but also working (and doing this a couple of times a week for the past 10 years) means that my in-house (literally) days are kicked up a notch in terms of "business casual". Tank top and drawstring pants are standard; bra and marinara stain on shirt are optional.

I do shower every day, but sometimes the jammies don't come off until 4 pm. C'est la vie; I can glam it up on the other days.

No way could I EVER work in an office again!
